Ingredients

For the Green Velvet Brownies
  • ¾ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • ¾ cup butter
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 (1-oz) bottle green liquid food coloring
  • tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • tsp salt
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ¼ cup buttermilk (or ¼ cup milk + 1 tsp white vinegar/lemon juice)
For the Cream Cheese Frosting
  • 1 (8-oz) package cream cheese softened
  • 3 Tbsp butter softened
  • cups powdered sugar
  • tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Equipment

  • 9-inch square pan
  • Large, microwave-safe bowl
  • Electric mixer
  • wire rack
  • Medium Bowl

Method

Prepare Your Pan
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F.
  2. Line the bottom and sides of a 9-inch square pan with aluminum foil, allowing 2 to 3 inches of foil to extend over the sides.
  3. Lightly grease the foil with cooking spray or butter.
Melt Chocolate and Butter
  1. In a large microwave-safe bowl, combine the semi-sweet chocolate chips and butter.
  2. Microwave at HIGH for 1-1/2 to 2 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds, until the mixture is completely melted and smooth.
Whisk in Sugar, Eggs, and Velvet Twist
  1. Whisk the sugar into the melted chocolate mixture until it is well combined.
  2. Add the large eggs one at a time, whisking just until blended after each addition.
  3. Now, for our special velvet twist, add 1 tablespoon of unsweetened cocoa powder and 1/4 cup of buttermilk (or 1/4 cup milk mixed with 1 teaspoon white vinegar or lemon juice). Whisk until these are just combined.
Add Dry and Wet Ingredients
  1. Gently stir in the all-purpose flour, green liquid food coloring, baking powder, vanilla extract, and salt until just combined. Be careful not to overmix; a few streaks of flour are perfectly fine.
  2. Pour this rich, green mixture evenly into your prepared pan.
Bake the Brownies
  1. Bake for 44 to 48 minutes, or until a wooden pick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs attached.
  2. Cool completely on a wire rack for at least 2 hours.
Prepare the Cream Cheese Frosting
  1. While the brownies cool, prepare your creamy Cream Cheese Frosting.
  2. In a medium bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and softened butter together at medium speed with an electric mixer until light and creamy.
  3. Gradually add the powdered sugar and a pinch of salt, beating until thoroughly blended and smooth.
  4. Stir in the vanilla extract until just combined.
Frost and Serve
  1. Once the brownies are completely cool, use the foil sides as handles to lift them gently from the pan.
  2. Carefully remove the foil.
  3. Spread the creamy Cream Cheese Frosting evenly over the top of the brownies.
  4. Cut into 16 squares.
  5. Garnish with sprinkles or other toppings, if desired, before serving. Enjoy your homemade Green Velvet Brownies!
